My views on the original Tourneur CAT PEOPLE, which I think is distinctly underwhemlming, unimpressive and overrated have got me into hot water with horror fans in the past. I've always enjoyed Schrader's film more precisely because of the sensibillity and influences he brings to the film. This is a complex and rewarding picture, which alone tells you its a totally different film to the 1942 movie, which is neither complex or rewarding. The original is a bag of tricks, which makes (in my view) the cardinal horror sin of cheating the audience out of a pay off...Schrader's film stands on its own, and deserves to stand on its own. I've been mixed on CAT PEOPLE as well. Schrader has even said he wasn't that impressed with the original.
