I think your assessment is right on the money. The audience I saw <I>Mandingo</I> with a couple of years ago was perfectly primed to giggle through it like a camp hoot, but after about 15 minutes the laughter died down, and there was applause at the end of he screening, as if they'd seen through the bullshit over its reputation to the film's true intent.
